Bright lines in Saint-Malo

A vertical lighting solution for the new culture centre

Dornbirn/Saint-Malo, May 31, 2016 – The new “La Grande Passerelle” culture centre in St. Malo was planned as a modern symbol of the French port town. LED modules and LED Drivers from Tridonic installed in a vertical lighting solution provide general illumination for the media library. The high luminous flux of the energy-efficient LED modules contributes to the beacon-like quality of the building at night.

If you approach Saint-Malo in northern Brittany by train one of the first things you will see is the new culture centre. Its media library in this popular tourist destination offers around 80,000 books, CDs and DVDs. The three screens in the art-house cinema are another major attraction at the centre. The spectacular building is located on the main axis road leading from the historic city centre to the sea. The architects at Architecture-Studio chose a double wave design for this two-part complex. Their generously proportioned design contains spacious rooms and high glass facades.

In keeping with the architectural concept, the 8’18’’ lighting designers created lines of light integrated in all the wooden pillars that give the glass facade its structure. This avoided the technical and physical presence of a ceiling lighting system, which would have been visible from outside. The lighting system underlines the feeling of space, is an integral part of the building and provides the right luminance levels.

The lighting system wins over the city authorities

The vertical lighting solution implemented by Sécante, the luminaire manufacturer, is given structure by wooden slats arranged horizontally. The spacing and angle of these slats very according to the height of the room. On the initiative of Sécante the T5 luminaires originally planned were replaced by an LED solution. The municipal authorities now benefit from lower maintenance costs, the elimination of disposal costs for discharge lamps containing mercury, and 50 percent higher luminous flux for the same energy consumption.

High luminous flux and perfectly homogenous light

Sécante, a French manufacturer specializing in tailor-made solutions, decided to work with Tridonic because they were able to react swiftly to customer-specific requirements and offer a five-year guarantee on the integrated solution. The high luminous flux values in the linear luminaires are produced by 2,600 TALEXXmodule LLE LED modules (more than 2,000 lm at the top end of the luminous flux range). These highly efficient LED modules from Tridonic offer high colour rendering (Ra > 80), narrow colour tolerance (MacAdam 4) and perfectly homogenous light when arranged together. They also have a long life of 50,000 hours. 50 LED modules from the TALEXXmodule LLE family were installed in areas where luminous fluxes of up to 800 lm were sufficient. The LED modules are operated by 700 TALEXXdriver LCI LED Drivers.
