In Karlsruhe, the site of the former railway workshops in the centre of the city is being redeveloped. The 10 hectare Citypark redevelopment will combine residential premises, offices and leisure facilities.
As soon as the sun goes down, the poles begin to pulse slowly with light, which resembles little light-houses. The colour of the light changes gently from bright white to warm white and back again, whilst water fountains lit from below and the reflections in the pool add to the atmosphere. “The only choice for creating these effects was LED technology”, said Jörg Feuersenger, LED Product Specialist at Tridonic, “This kind of project would be impossible with conventional light sources.”
The power of LEDs
The cylindrical upper section of the pole is about five metres high and is designed as a diffuser tube lit from inside by controllable LEDs. The TALEXXchain P511-IP67 CRYSTAL LED chains in the crystal white and warm white colours, ensure high-quality uniform illumination of the entire pole. Two TALEXXconverter K240-2 12V units are installed in each pole to operate the LEDs and these converters are controlled by 3-channel TALEXXcontrol C004 PWM amplifiers. The colour changes are controlled by the integrated sequencer of the 3-channel TALEXXconverter K211 DALI dimming controller and the entire installation is programmed via a luxCONTROL DALI USB interface module running software supplied free of charge by Tridonic.
The poles are ideal for use outdoors and meet the requirements of protection class I / type of protection IP65. The robust base of the pole is a stainless steel section and the top section is made of impact-resistant, satinised acrylic to withstand all manner of external factors. The demands on the light sources in terms of their robustness and lifespan were also very high. TALEXXchain P511-IP67 meets these demands perfectly with its IP67 design and long life of up to 50,000 hours. The cost-intensive process of replacing the light sources in these five-metre high poles is therefore kept to a minimum. In addition, the high quality of the LED modules used ensures a constant and uniform appearance across all five poles. This charming combination of the elements of light and water gives the installation an attractive atmosphere.
