High quality products backed by fast delivery and a five year warranty were all factors in the choice of Tridonic PC PRO fixed output ballasts for the Princess Noura Bint Abdul Rahman University for Women in Saudi Arabia.

The comprehensive range of products within the PC PRO family, able to optimise performance of a wide range of luminaires, was also of great benefit to the project.

With a capacity for around 26,000 students, the university will cover eight million square metres with a total built up area of three million square metres. Its facilities will include administration buildings, 13 faculties, a 700-bed student hospital, laboratories, research centres, and residential areas for students and staff. Construction work began in the second quarter of 2009 and is expected to complete in early 2012.

To date, 145,000 PC PRO ballasts of various types have been supplied to the project, via original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) supplying luminaires to the project. Tridonic’s ability to ensure timely deliveries and to liaise closely with the different OEMs was therefore a key factor in the smooth running of the project. Similar quantities of PC PRO ballasts are expected to be ordered by the end of 2010.

The use of PC PRO fixed output electronic ballasts will enable the university to optimise the energy consumption of the predominantly T5 fluorescent lighting being used throughout the site. In addition, the pre-heating of lamp electrodes, high ignition voltage, limitation of discharge current and defined hot restart – all features of the PC PRO range thanks to the patented xitec processor – will help to extend lamp life and reduce maintenance costs.

Other features of PC PRO include Intelligent Voltage Guard, which automatically monitors the mains voltage at the ballasts and if this drops below 150 V the ballasts automatically switch-off. If the voltage increases above 305 V, the lamps flash to indicate a malfunction. These features are particularly important in such a vast complex as the Princess Noura Bint Abdul Rahman University for Women as they facilitate identification of faults by maintenance staff.

This extensive use of PC PRO ballasts forms the bedrock of an efficient lighting system that will enable the university to achieve a low cost of ownership through the life of the facility.
